New Zealand has fantastic flying sites and something to offer every pilot. From black sand beach soaring to flat-land thermalling to snow clad mountain XC, New Zealand has it all. Whether you are coming to fly in New Zealand as a student, free-flyer or professional pilot, you will find the local community very welcoming.
However, before you spread your wings there are certain conditions that must be met.
Visiting students
Please contact a paragliding or hang gliding instructor in the area you wish to learn to fly.
Qualified Pilots
Hang gliding and paragliding in NZ is regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority, which requires all pilots to be members of the NZHGPA.
This also applies to overseas visiting pilots. Visiting pilots can purchase a four-month NZHGPA visiting pilot membership for a fee of $60. You will need to show that you understand the visual flight rules for NZ. A study guide and test can be found here OPM & Forms. You will also get information about flying at local sites.
Contact a local paragliding or hang gliding instructor to obtain your membership.
To be granted a pilot certificate, visiting paraglider pilots will be required to present one of the following:
– Para Pro 3 or greater Hang Gliding Federation of Australia
– Intermediate United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association Inc
– P3 Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association of Canada
– Intermediate British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association
– Club Pilot Swiss Hang Gliding & Paragliding Association
– Pilot German Hanggliding and Paragliding Federation
– A License Visiting hang glider pilots will be required to present one of the following: Safe Pro 3 or greater Hang Gliding Federation of Australia
– Intermediate United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association Inc
– H3 Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association of Canada
– Intermediate British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association
– Club Pilot Swiss Hang Gliding & Paragliding Association
– Pilot German Hanggliding and Paragliding Federation
– A License Applications which do not qualify under the above may be referred to either the HG or PG training managers for validation of their flying standards.
